Breakfast Briefing | From Inclusive Practices to Expansive Belonging: Recruiting and Retaining Students of Color
Online modalities can be invaluable to increasing diversity in higher education. However, there is little research that examines strategic initiatives to expand diversity in online program. Specifically, studies that empirically assess recruitment and retention efforts among URMs are sparse. This presentation details a multi-year initiative to successfully recruit and retain URMs in an online graduate program at a large, public institution. Phase I tested effective online recruitment activities, specific to URMs. Phase II focused on fostering belonging as a retention strategy. Participants who engage in this presentation will understand findings and glean strategies for effective URM recruitment/retention in online programming.
