SoWa: A High-Density Streetcar Neighborhood

South Waterfront is Portland’s big leap towards high-rise, high-density urban living. Oregon Health Sciences University, progressive developers and the City partnered to build a transit-friendly neighborhood served by an aerial tram, streetcar expansion, bikeways, walking trails and a soon-to-be-built transit bridge. Many are asking, “Is Portland ready for this new step?” The tour – via streetcar and aerial tram – highlights many of the district’s innovative concepts, how developers and local agencies are responding to the current economic recession, and transit’s role in determining the district’s eventual success.

  1. (1:00pm) START - Hilton Hotel, Downtown Portland
  2. Portland Streetcar stop near SW 11th & Taylor
    After boarding the Portland Streetcar, discussion of development, partnerships and strategies of South Waterfront’s planning and development. The discussion will include transit-oriented development in the district and expansion of streetcar.
  3. Portland Streetcar stop at SW Bancroft
    After deboarding the Portland Streetcar, the tour will walk towards the John Ross building. Discuss the City of Portland’s role in the redevelopment of South Waterfront as Portland’s newest neighborhood.
  4. Mirabella, LEED Platinum Active Aging Community
  5. OHSU Center for Health and Healing
    At the OHSU Center for Health and Healing, (OHSU) will discuss the LEED Platinum building’s innovative green building features. After a break stop in the 3rd floor conference room, the tour will visit the base of the nearby Portland Aerial Tram, before boarding the tram for a ride to OHSU’s main campus, an experience no visitor should miss.
  6. Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) main campus
    At the upper terminal of the Portland Aerial Tram on OHSU’s main campus, The tour will depart back to the lower terminal at 3:30am.
  7. Portland Streetcar stop at the OHSU Center for Health and Healing
    The tour will board a northbound Portland Streetcar to return to Downtown Portland.
  8. Portland Streetcar stop near the Multnomah County Library (Central Branch)
    Deboard the Portland Streetcar and walk east to the Hilton Hotel
