Online Leadership Roundtable (OLR) Convening

Leadership Responses to the Pandemic - What We Learned, How Our Work Has Changed, and Why We Need to Influence Our Future

January 28 | 2:00PM - 5:00PM

Join Chief Online Learning Officers (COLOs) and other senior leaders* as we explore three important topics challenging most institutions and leaders:

  • The Convergence of Online and Remote Instruction: Why Differentiating Online from ‘Remote Instruction’ is Critical - We will discuss how institutions are differentiating between intentionally designed online learning experiences and remote instruction, and consider whether remote instruction has helped or hurt online learning overall. We will discuss how institutions are (or are not) differentiating the two for the purposes of institutional research (i.e. can we even compare ‘online’ and ‘face-to-face’ course retention rates anymore?) and more.

    • Justin Louder, Texas Tech University
    • Lisa Templeton, Oregon State University
    • Tonya Amankwatia, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
    • Ann Taylor, Pennsylvania State University
    • Moderator: Gerald Rhead, Michigan State University

  • “You’re supporting the entire campus.” - Now What? - The pandemic caused a tectonic shift on most campuses. Online units previously charged with serving and advocating for “non-traditional” students became the sole solution for the continuity of instruction and all student retention efforts. Small, often understaffed teams became trainers, procurement experts, license managers, ADA liaisons, and quality assurance leads overnight...and these conditions persist. Is this the natural evolution of our role? Should we have anticipated that online learning would eventually become embedded in all aspects of campus? Or, should we expect our role to return to ‘normal’? Now that we’ve saved our institutions from imminent doom, do we have some political capital? If so, what should we do with it?
    • Kim Siegenthaler, Georgia State University
    • Sasha Thackaberry, Louisiana State University
    • Barbara Kopp Miller, University of Toledo
    • Asim Ali, Auburn University
    • Moderator: John Caron, Excelsior College

  • The Way Forward: Post-Pandemic Online Operations - While we may be mired in how we deliver yet another term of ‘hybrid flexible remote synchronous’ instruction, we cannot lose sight of the fact that  campus operations will eventually return to some semblance of ‘normal’. There will be on campus classes again, and we will need to develop and launch new, fully online courses and programs that meet the needs of learners - both learners of today and those in the future. As we look ahead we will discuss how leaders should be preparing for a post-pandemic world.
    • Bettyjo Bouchey, National Louis University
    • Tom Cavanagh, University of Central Florida
    • Todd Nicolet, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
    • Nancy Salzman, Brandman University
    • Moderator: Craig Wilson, University of Arizona

Roundtable Convenings: They are about CONVERSATIONS!

Every Roundtable Convening has focused on conversations, convening senior online leaders to discuss important topics. Although this convening is virtual, we have not sacrificed any of the engagement or opportunities for leaders to form connections with their peers.

The Online Leadership Roundtable Advisory Council has planned an engaging three-hour convening. We will step through the same agenda for each of our three topics:

  • A brief panel discussion featuring 3-4 panelists and a moderator, all senior leaders from the field of online learning

  • Breakout rooms where all participants will have a chance to chat and discuss the topic, share resources, and capture ideas

  • A quick idea/strategy sharing session

Please note that this registration is for the SOLA+R 2021 Roundtable Convening only. Registration for the UPCEA 2021 Summit for Online Leadership and Administration (SOLA) is separate. To register to attend UPCEA 2021 SOLA, click here.  You must be registered for the 2021 SOLA in order to attend the UPCEA SOLA+R Roundtable Convening.
Registration will close on Tuesday, January 26 to ensure all participants have access to the virtual event platform.

*UPCEA Chief Online Learning Officers and Institutional Representatives are welcome to register for this event. If your president, provost, or other senior campus leader is not designated as either for your institution, please contact Julie Uranis (juranis@upcea.edu) to have him/her/they added to the registrant list.

Thank You to the Rountable Sponsor!
