Designing for Quality at Scale

Learn how Utah State University’s instructional design shop, the Center for Innovative Design and Instruction (CIDI), restructured their entire team over the last four years with the aim of balancing scale and quality. Hear from members of CIDI’s 10-person team about their current shop set-up, faculty development program supporting teaching and learning, internal university partnerships, and more. Also learn about the organizational implications of the team’s development of the Canvas authoring tool Design Tools, and how finding something that works well for the team can benefit both the team and the community at large.

12:00-1:00 PM ET Setting Up Shop for Scalability
 

Approach: Strategic
In this session, the leaders who created the vision and operationalized it will talk about the strategic goals and initiatives, such as accessibility, that had been set and how the Center was reorganized in order to make it happen, including how these influenced the team in terms of structure, roles and responsibilities. (*Leaders will be addressing both questions submitted in advance, as well as those from the live audience.)

Approach: Applied
In this session, participants will talk to one of the instructional designers and programmer responsible for the creation of Design Tools for Canvas.  They will discuss how the proximity between these job roles influenced its development and how it has impacted work flows.  They will also discuss how building these efficiencies has allowed the team to expand their initiatives into more areas, including faculty development, digital badging, and data-driven-decision making. (*Leaders will be addressing both questions submitted in advance, as well as those from the live audience.)

Approach: Foundational
In this session, administrators, instructional designers and faculty will discuss how several internal areas collaborated to develop a successful academic program for an external client. They will discuss how the program was initiated, who was involved (Vivint, College of Business, CIDI, Registrar, etc.), how the program developed including curriculum, assessments, training, and administration, as well as its ongoing “Momentum” to keep pace with the needs of the client and their students. They will share challeges face and lessons learned to designing a successful, scalable, high-quality program.

4:00-5:00 PM ET ThinkTank Working Session
  Approach: Applied
In this session, ThinkTank participants will have an opportunity to dive deeper into topics covered throughout the day. They will be given a chance to share similar experiences, brainstorm potential barriers and solutions, and discuss these with others who have first-hand experiences in order to problem solve and prepare for initiatives at their own institutions.

All registration cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing. Full refunds will be granted for cancellations received by March 11, 2018. No refunds or credits will be granted for cancellations after March 11, 2018. Please submit all requests to Jacqueline Romero at jromero@upcea.edu. Anyone who is registered but cannot attend may send a substitute from the same organization. Refunds will not be given for no-shows. Please note that all cancellation fees apply even if initial invoice has yet to be paid.
