UPCEA eDesign Collaborative ThinkTank Roadshow: Loyola University Chicago

Lessons Learned from our Design-a-Palooza: A Professional Development Series for Online Faculty

Date/Time: October 21, 2022 1:00-3:00 PM ET

The Office of Online Learning (OOL) from Loyola University Chicago hosted Design-a-palooza, a professional development series for online instructors in March 2022. This series focused on leading faculty through the use of four advanced course designs: blended learning, peer learning, gamification, and project/problem-based learning. Design-a-palooza was OOL’s first post-pandemic attempt to instruct teachers on more advanced online teaching and learning topics. We will use this Think Tank to share our lessons learned, upcoming plans for professional development for online instructors, and how Design-a-palooza is informing those plans. Additionally, we will use breakout rooms to facilitate small group discussions to hear your thoughts on post-pandemic professional development for online teaching.

Why Loyola University Chicago?
As in-person programs return to campus, the Office of Online Learning (OOL) has seen a reduced use of professional development services, a trend similarly experienced by many faculty support units across the university. An initial assumption that faculty felt they had acquired the needed baseline knowledge about online teaching during the pandemic was recently confirmed through a faculty survey. While the need for professional development about online teaching fundamentals undoubtedly still exists, OOL is starting to push its professional development toward offerings about more advanced topics in hopes of reaching faculty that want to learn beyond the basics. OOL is a support team at a private, Jesuit, institution where we support instructors as they design and develop their online courses. Further, as a small team, it is imperative that we provide high-quality professional development opportunities for online teaching as we cannot provide one-to-one support for all online instructors. We look forward to sharing our lessons learned and hearing how you prepare instructors for online teaching.
