Making Your Own Luck:  Entrepreneurship in Higher Education

Continuing education is often the entrepreneurial wing of a traditional institution. It is able to be more nimble and respond to market needs. Sometimes it has different rules of governance, and it often has a different and less traditional culture. And that is good because the cornerstone of innovation is risk taking.

A good entrepreneur knows how to assess a situation, develop a data-driven plan, take action, and measure and adjust along the way — knowing that the whole thing might crash and burn. Continuing and professional education is not for the timid, nor is it for the reckless. It is for careful planners and deep thinkers who are able to step off of the ledge and take a chance. It takes brains, guts, and an inordinate share of luck.

Sean-Michael’s talk will inspire attendees to seek their inner-entrepreneur and to assess their ability to test their luck in the high stakes game of continuing education.
