UPCEA Mid-Atlantic 2014 Regional Conference

Leading the Charge

The theme of the 2014 UPCEA Mid-Atlantic conference is “Leading the Charge”, reflecting the role that contemporary continuing, professional, and online education units play in their institutions and in higher education.  Such units have been charged with developing new programs, in new modalities, for new audiences, and that cultivate new revenue streams.  Increasingly, continuing, professional, and online education units have also been charged with driving change and innovation in traditional academic units, rather than simply working in parallel or in collaboration with such units as in the past.  The net effect is that continuing, professional, and online education units are leading their institutions’ charge forward into the future of higher education.  The 2014 Mid-Atlantic regional conference is designed to provide practical models for success as continuing, professional, and online education units take on the charge.  Presentations for individuals in leadership, operations, and student services roles are aligned with UPCEA’s networks.  The conference theme also reflects the role that UPCEA has played over the last 100 years, leading the charge for quality, innovation, leadership, professional development, research, and benchmarking in continuing, professional, and online education.

The conference will also launch the third cohort of the Mid-Atlantic region’s Emerging Leaders Program. This year-long program begins with a pre-conference workshop at the 2014 conference, continues with a year-long collaborative cohort project, and culminates with presentation at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic conference.  These activities provide participants with the opportunity to collaboratively explore the theory and practice of continuing education leadership with peers from across the Mid-Atlantic region.  The program is designed to prepare the next generation of the region’s leaders to “lead the charge”. This year’s theme also reflects the many ways in which Delaware and the 2014 host institution, the University of Delaware, have led the charge to exploration and innovation.  The image of Caesar Rodney on Delaware’s quarter memorializes his overnight ride from Dover, DE to Philadelphia to cast the deciding vote for the Declaration of Independence in the Continental Congress in July of 1776.  Three signers of the Declaration of Independence and one signer of the U.S. Constitution are UDel graduates, leading the charge to formation of a new country.  UDel was the first U.S. university to establish a study abroad program, leading the charge to provide students with a culturally rich and diverse educational experience.  As a land, sea, and space grant institution, UDel leads the charge to explore and understand all aspects of our natural world.  UDel’s new Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus is designed to be a center of innovation that focuses on science, technology, engineering and clinical practice in areas ranging from biomedicine and biotechnology to alternative energy and environmental sustainability.

Service Project
For the sixth straight year, the Mid-Atlantic region will conduct a service project designed to serve the community in which its annual conference is held.  The 2014 service project will benefit Lori's Hands

Lori's Hands offers community health service learning opportunities to undergraduates through meaningful service to chronically ill clients in the students' communities.  Individuals attending the 2014 UPCEA Mid-Atlantic conference will be provided with the opportunity to make monetary donations to Lori’s Hands to support the work of students in service to the community.  Through the generosity of past conference attendees, the Mid-Atlantic region has collected $500-$900 annually to support previous service projects.

On Your Own Activity
Costumes of Downton Abbey® at Winterthur Museum - Experience an original exhibition of exquisite fashions from the award-winning television series “Downton Abbey” at Winterthur Museum, a 45 minute drive from the conference.  The exhibit includes 40 outfits on display and is the only United States exhibit to feature costumes from this renowned series, which has won a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries and seven Emmy awards.
