This year’s conference explores continuing education’s role in the changes afoot in higher education today. Rather than passively existing at the crossroads of such changes, continuing education is actively and dynamically leading the way in the areas of innovation, quality, and service. Continuing education is doing so by serving as a gateway to innovation, quality, and service through the development and expansion of new programs, pedagogies, formats, technologies, audiences, services, economies, and partnerships.

The conference provides opportunities for front-line, mid-level, and senior leaders to engage in sessions on emerging topics such as competency based education, the strategic use of MOOCs, digital badges, supporting international students through intensive English language programs, programs and services for veterans, and partnering with for-profit, community, and economic development entities. The new program showcase provides continuing education units to highlight the wide variety of innovative programs they’ve developed and launched in the last 1-2 years.

The conference will also launch the second cohort of the Mid-Atlantic region’s Emerging Leaders Program. This year-long program begins with a pre-conference workshop at the 2013 conference, a year-long collaborative cohort project, and a culminating presentation at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic conference. These activities provide participants’ with the opportunity to collaboratively explore the theory and practice of continuing education leadership with peers from across the Mid-Atlantic region. At this year’s conference the 2012-2013 cohort will present the results of their year-long research project, the characteristics of emerging leaders.

The 2013 conference theme builds upon its geographic location in Bethesda, Maryland … historically considered to be a “gateway to the nation’s capital”. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency (http://www.bethesda.hyatt.com), located in the heart of downtown Bethesda and within easy walking distance to 192 restaurants and 520 shops (http://www.bethesda.org). Immediately adjacent to the Hyatt is the Bethesda Metro stop (http://www.wmata.com/rail/), providing conference attendees with easy access to downtown Washington D.C. for sightseeing and additional dining opportunities.
