Welcome Remarks

Named Professor of Political Science and President of the University of Miami in 2001, Dr. Shalala has more than 30 years of experience as an accomplished scholar, teacher, and administrator. In 1993 President Clinton appointed her U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) where she served for eight years, becoming the longest serving HHS Secretary in U.S. history. She serves as a distinguished senior fellow in the Economic Studies Program and the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution. As President of Excelencia in Education, a leading organization working to accelerate Latino success in higher education, Ms. Brown has spent more than two decades at prominent national educational institutions and at the highest levels of government working to implement effective strategies to raise academic achievement and opportunity for low-income and minority students. Ms. Brown began her career at the University of Texas at Austin by building a national model promoting minority success in graduate education, served as Executive Director of the White House Initiative for Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans under President Bill Clinton and U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley. Dr. Rao has extensive experience in both the business and academic arenas, most recently serving as a professor in new business formation in graduate business programs at Florida International University. He has consulted on new product development with Fortune 500 corporations, on community economic development with the U.S. government, and on venture development with entrepreneurs and venture development institutions. A nationally acclaimed author, Dr. Rao’s latest book, Bootstrap to Billions: How Entrepreneurs Build Great Companies from Scratch, shows how to build Fortune 500 companies without resources. He also is the entrepreneurial finance columnist for Forbes.com, one of the world’s largest online business sites. Read more.


Freeman A. Hrabowski, III

Dr. Hrabowski has served as President of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the recent report, Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads. He also was recently named by President Obama to chair the newly created President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. Read more.

Paul S. George is a Professor of History at Miami-Dade College, Wolfson Campus. He also serves as Historian to the Historical Association of Southern Florida. A native Miamian, Paul George is a graduate of Miami Dade Community College and the University of Miami. He holds a Masters and Ph.D. degree in History from Florida State University. Dr. George has taught in several universities and colleges, including Florida State University, Florida A & M University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Miami. Between 1997 and 2000, he held the Arthur Hertz Endowed Chair at Miami-Dade College. Read more.
